Angelo Sassaroli
Department of Biomedical Engineering, Tufts University, USA

BRIEF ABSTRACT
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has received increasing attention over the last two to three decades by many scientists due to its versatility for monitoring pathological and functional conditions. Its main merits and also its problems in the three main applications will be reviewed: muscle oxygenation studies, breast cancer diagnosis, and especially brain imaging.
The latter application will be discussed more specifically and the main theoretical andì computational models with which the experimental results can be interpreted will be introduced.
Angelo Sassaroli graduated from the University of Florence, Italy, in 1996 (laureate in physics). He received his PhD in physics from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan, in 2002. From July 2002 to August 2007, he was a research associate in the group of Prof. Sergio Fantini at Tufts University, Medford (MA). In September 2007, he was appointed by Tufts University as a research assistant professor. His fields of research are near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse optical tomography.
